There are many similarities and differences between Richard Wright's "The Fight" and Raymond Barrio's "The Confrontation". Some similarities I noticed were the fact that both were short stories about some kind of conflict. Both stories consisted of male characters. I never read anywhere in either story of a female character of importance. Both acts of conflicts served a purpose. In "The Fight", the main character fought to gain acceptance in his new school. In "The Confrontation", the main character (Manuel) fought against being cheated out on a paycheck he and his fellow workers so rightfully deserved. Both conflicts also achieved success in obtaining their goals. The goal in "The Fight" was for the main character to achieve status by exhibiting his fighting skills and toughness and defeating all of his opponents thus, ultimately becoming accepted by his fellow students. The goal that was achieved in "The Confrontation" was for the main character to stand up against the overseer Roberto Morales. Some differences I noticed were the fact that the conflict in Richard Wright's "The Fight" was a physical fist fight. The conflict in Raymond Barrio's "The Confrontation" was along the lines of civil disobedience. When Roberto Morales asked for two cents out of everyone's bucket, Manuel understood that two cents out of everyone's bucket ment two or three dollars out of everyone's paycheck. After Manuel confronted Roberto about how he promised not to take anything from anyone, he kicked his own bucket and another worker's bucket. Roberto gave in and took nothing from no one. The setting of the two stories were different too. "The Fight" took place at a school. "The Confrontation" took place at a work environment. The kind of characters were different. Yes, the characters were male but they were different in the sense that the males in "The Fight" were boys and the males in "The Confrontation" were men. In conclusion, sometimes people have to do certain things either to be accepted or stand up for themselves.
